Welcome to the world of EVs

Electric vehicles (EVs) are steadily emerging as a major trend in the transportation sector, offering efficient solutions for powering vehicles with renewable energy. They present numerous benefits, including lower operating and maintenance costs, and help mitigate the effects of ongoing fuel shortages. By relying on renewable energy, EVs reduce dependence on fossil fuels and are expected to benefit the local economy significantly in the years ahead.

Mr. Olanrewaju Ogunkunle, the Chief Executive Officer of Revocube Energies — a company dedicated to driving innovation and renewable energy solutions — recently shared insights with his team about the company’s interest in and acquisition of EVs for its operations. He revealed that the company began exploring this decision two years ago, adding that his interest in EVs played a major role in steering the company toward vehicular energy independence.

While drawing comparisons between EVs and traditional vehicles, he stated, “An electric car is more economical and makes a lot of commercial sense. To buy a fairly used Toyota Camry now costs around 20 million naira, and those who reside on the Island and work on the Mainland would spend between seventy thousand to eighty thousand naira on fuel each week, which amounts to almost three hundred and twenty thousand naira monthly. This cost excludes maintenance services.” He added, “Electric Vehicles aren’t a hundred per cent perfect, but they’re worth it.”

Highlighting the advantages of EVs, Ogunkunle explained, “They don’t need the usual car servicing like engine oil, gear oil, or filters. EVs don’t even have complex gear systems. The battery of an EV has a lifespan of about ten to fifteen years.” He emphasised that EVs are equipped with fast-charging capabilities, allowing them to be charged using a standard home AC electrical socket. He added that slow charging an EV takes 6-8 hours, whereas fast charging only requires 15-35 minutes. When fully charged, an EV can run for an extended period of about 3 to 4 days. He noted that EVs can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds, while a hybrid EV can cover up to 10 kilometres on electric power alone.

When asked if EVs can operate in flooded areas or are water-resistant, Ogunkunle responded, “Rain is not a problem, but driving through floods isn’t advisable. EVs can handle water splashes, but it’s strongly recommended not to drive them through a pool of water.”

Ogunkunle advised those considering an EV to “always check the brakes, as EVs are very fast and require skilled drivers.”

As Revocube Energies ventures into the EV space, Ogunkunle stated that the company has installed cost-saving, high-capacity solar systems to charge these vehicles, which can also accommodate other EV owners for a fee. Furthermore, he reiterated that Revocube Energies is actively involved in other renewable energy solutions, including both onsite and offsite solar installations for schools, businesses, and residences, as well as providing telecommunications base stations. These initiatives demonstrate the company’s broader commitment to advancing sustainable energy technologies across various industries.

Through its innovative approach and commitment to sustainability, Revocube Energies is not just adapting to the changes in the transportation sector; it is leading the charge towards a greener future, setting an example for others to follow in providing renewable energy solutions.
