DisCos Collect ₦603bn Despite Lower Power Offtake
Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies (DisCos) collected ₦603.64bn from customers in Q2 2026, even as the volume of electricity they received from the power market declined, according to the latest report from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)
Average power offtake by the DisCos fell by 3.4%, from 3,309.48MWh/h in Q1 to 3,197.03MWh/h in Q2. Despite the decline, the companies achieved an overall offtake performance of 94.07% against available partially contracted capacity.
The DisCos received 6,982.32GWh during the quarter but billed customers for 5,812.31GWh. The value of electricity taken stood at ₦946.57bn, while customer bills totalled ₦744.67bn.
Of that amount, the DisCos recovered ₦603.64bn, giving them a collection efficiency of 81.06%, an improvement from 78.95% in Q1. However, the gap between what was billed and what was actually collected remained significant at ₦141.03bn.
The sector also continued to face high technical, commercial and collection losses. Aggregate ATC&C losses stood at 36.23%, well above the 16.92% target under the 2026 MYTO framework. NERC estimated that the losses translated to about ₦129.07bn in revenue that was not recovered.
While collection performance improved, the figures highlight a bigger challenge for the distribution segment: DisCos are still losing a substantial portion of the value of electricity supplied to customers through billing gaps, collection shortfalls, and network losses.
NERC’s data shows that improving revenue recovery will remain critical to strengthening the financial position of DisCos and supporting investment across Nigeria’s electricity distribution network.
