Abia to Spend €2.6 million on Solar for Health Project

The Abia State Government is partnering with the European Union (EU) on a renewable energy initiative, Solar for Health project, aimed at improving electricity access in healthcare facilities across the state.
Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr Ikechukwu Monday made the disclosure during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting in Umuahia.
Monday said Abia is one of six states in Nigeria selected to benefit from the project, having successfully met all eligibility requirements.
“Solar for Health is an EU initiative that deploys renewable energy systems to power health facilities, as well as nearby productive users,” the commissioner said.
He revealed that the EU would be funding the project with over €2 million, while the Abia State Government will provide €624,000 as counterpart funding.
A minimum of nine health facilities in the state will benefit from the project which is expected to deliver a cumulative capacity of 500 kilowatts.
In addition to powering the health centres, the installations will extend support to nearby businesses, such as shops, to enhance economic sustainability.
“It’s not just about health facilities. By supporting productive users, we create a more sustainable energy ecosystem,” Monday explained.
Each installation will be equipped with metering systems and will attract a modest service charge to ensure regular operation and maintenance.
In addition, the systems will include battery storage to guarantee uninterrupted supply during low solar output periods, such as during the rainy season.
“We are incorporating multiple energy sources to increase system reliability,” the commissioner added.
